The Ecology Center at Camp Harrison was developed in 2005 to create an awareness and understanding of the natural environment around us through hands-on education and research-based projects. With our passionate instructors, variety of programs and diverse landscape, we strive to be the best environmental education program North Carolina has to offer. We are always happy to tailor any program to fit the needs of your school. Students:
- Learn about environmental concepts
- Have hands-on experience with the scientific process in many of our outdoor classrooms.
- Have an opportunity to develop a lifelong interest in science
- Make a valid contribution to the scientific community through research-based projects specific to the Brushy Mountains and North Carolina
- Are challenged to think critically about ethical issues pertaining to the environment
- Become stewards of the earth with ideas that they can implement in their everyday lives
All classes taught at Camp Harrison meet the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
In conjunction with the overall mission of the YMCA, all of our programs incorporate the values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.
Our featured program is a 3-day, 2-night experience where students participate in outdoor ecology classes, team-building/low ropes, a town council meeting, night hikes, and are challenged by our Dr. Seuss-based characters to be stewards of the earth. We also offer single day programs.
