Somewhere between becoming an adult and being a kid, a teen is discovering who they are and who they want to be. Often misunderstood, teens want us to know that they are growing up. At YMCA Camp Harrison, we know that teenagers will rise to meet expectations set for them, so we set our expectations high.

Through BTR, teens will be guided through Camp Harrison's 2,160 brushy mountain acres by our skilled staff members. Our goals for this program are that teens will learn key leadership and wilderness skills, foster a respect for the environment, build strong self confidence, become an open minded team player, and become closer to God.

What does this program consist of?

Backpacking   Wood Processing   Rock Climbing
Fire Building     Shelter Building   Tent Set up
Open Fire Cooking   "Leave no Trace" Education   Knot Skills
Survival Skills   Daily Devotions   Team Packing
Group Projects   Wilderness Buddy System   Life Lessons

What to expect?

Our staff will put teens through various adventure activities and real life wilderness scenarios to test out their outdoor skills and leadership skills. Teens will be asked to push themselves beyond the expected and to embrace every challenge so that they can realize their full potential. Everything in this program is done with intention to show teens God's great plan, love and hope for their lives, through devotions, lessons learned and fellowship.

Typical nights will include sleeping under the stars on God's rugged and beautiful land in either tents, hammocks, their self constructed outpost, or the Tee Pee Village. While BTR is a co-ed program, genders will be separated into different areas at night and be joined by the appropriate gendered counselor. One of their last nights will be spent sleeping in a shelter that they construct themselves during the week. On their last night they will re-join Camp Harrison's traditional camp so they can participate in even more camp activities, eat meals with the entire camp and sleep in an air conditioned cabin.

The intentions of BTR are to go beyond just 1-2 weeks of life together. Those who become part of BTR will have the opportunities for quarterly reunions and accountability groups. To be a teen leader requires accountability, authenticity, teens need each other and we want to help them succeed in living out their faith.
